Grass-Fed Beef

custon herd 2011From the begining of time cattle, as well as sheep, goats, bison and all other ruminant animals have been designed to graze grass and browse. They were not designed  eat massive amounts of grain, animal by-products, chicken manure, stale bakery waste.  Nor do they need antibiotics, dewormers, vaccines, or steriod growth hormones.
Prior to the 1940's all beef was grown without grain and the drug crutches that go with it.
It was naturally healthy and a had a delicious rich flavour that is now rare in modern meat, but is making a comeback...

At Cool Springs Ranch the cows are frequently and regularly moved to clean fresh grass and water with free-choice sea salt/minerals. In the winter they eat high quality hay. Although it takes much longer to grow, it is a simple life were the cattle rarely ever enter a corral except for pregnancy checking.  We don't raise them to a certain age, but aim for a body condition that indicates a 'good grass-fed finish'.  In the end they are harvested with zero stress right on the pasture and processed in our Regional Health Inspected on-farm butchershop.

When the animals eat good, so do we!
